    Cluster headache (CH) is a severe disabling condition which strikes as an excruciating unilateral pain and there is no cure. It is more common among men, but more severe among women and sleep deficiencies have been reported. Genetics, circadian rhythm and inflammation have been implicated in CH pathophysiology. The overall purpose of this research project is to understand the molecular mechanisms and clinical characteristics of CH in order improve diagnosis and treatment by identifying biomarkers and novel drug targets, as well as develop future treatment strategies. This will be achieved by the following specific aims: 1) Characterize candidate genes coupled to CH pathophysiology2) Explore sleep and circadian rhythm in relation to CH and treatment3) Validate sex hormones with regard to CH characteristics4) Identify inflammatory mechanisms involved in CH5) Develop and characterize cell models of CH pathophysiologyThese aims will be achieved by using a worldleading CH biobank comprising biological tissue and clinical and demographic data. The research team has a unique position to execute the proposed project during a five-year period due to its complementary multidisciplinary expertise, in key areas such as genetics, cell biology, bioinformatics, circadian rhythm and neurology. These studies will allow insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms and aid the identification of biomarkers and disease-associated pathways suitable to target in the development of novel drugs.

    A large collaborate research project to address emerging healthcare challenges through innovation, cross-sector cooperation, and the integration of technological solutions. The Hospital@Home (H@H) initiative aims to break the singular silo approach by focusing on multiple conditions that represent high morbidity, often require intensive monitoring and coordinated care. The chosen use cases include cardiovascular, pulmonology, minor stroke/TIA, migraine, and cluster headache, as these use cases show large promise for improving prevention through early detection of disease progression or degeneration by using advanced monitoring tools. The total funding for H@H was 21,8 million Euro.
