Breast cancer epidemiology – Kamila Czene's research group

We focus on breast cancer in a very broad sense and build our projects on the strong epidemiologic tradition and infrastructure of our home department. We collaborate with several strong research groups and clinical networks.

Our research

The long-term goal of Kamila Czene’s research group is to reduce the mortality of breast cancer in two fundamental ways. First by improving the early detection of the disease, followed by identifying the sub-group of women at increased risk of dying due to breast cancer. The research group investigates understudied areas, such as host factors of women - germline genetic variants and mammographic features.

Among the ongoing projects in the group, two areas are in special focus; interval breast cancers - cancers diagnosed between two mammographic screening rounds and endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients. 

Other research interests include:

  • To determine genetic variants associated with prognosis of breast cancer (inherited alterations)
  • To study the long-term breast cancer prognosis as well as the panorama of diseases in breast cancer survivors
  • Better understanding of mammographic density and implementation for clinical use
  • To identify novel breast-tumor specific markers for disease progression (somatic alterations)
