Bo Runeson

My thesis, defended 1990 at Göteborgs university, concerned Suicide in youth and was based on interviews with next-of-kin. I continued with suicide research and clinical work in general psychiatry in the western region of Sweden.

Became 1997 associate professor at Karolinska Institutet in psychiatry, especially in suicidology. I started working 1999 at St Göran, with a responsibility for the psychiatry course of the medical school and clinical work with patients with bipolar disorder.

From 2008 installed as professor of psychiatry at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, with a responsibility for education within the department. I am since 2021 professor emeritus. I have had a research group with focus on suicide, violence and mental ill-health in young people. The methods have included both clinical patient samples and national population registers. 

I started the national quality register for bipolar disorder (BipoläR) and have been responsible for clinical guidelines for suicide prevention on a national and regional level. I have been a scientific advisor within SBU (Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment) and the National Board of Health and Welfare, and as an advisor within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. I have previously been on the board of Swedish Medical Society for six years. i am since 2025 a member of the Ethics delegation at Swedish Medical Society.
