About Comparative Medicine

Comparative Medicine provides cutting-edge expertise and infrastructure for conducting animal-based research at Karolinska Institutet.

Our staff includes animal technicians, ethologists, technicians, veterinarians, research specialists, and administrative personnel. We provide services and guidance on laboratory animal matters to researchers, doctoral students, and other employees at Karolinska Institutet.

Specialists in laboratory animal science

Those of us working in Comparative Medicine are specialists in laboratory animal science. Our goal is to support research and education aimed at improving human health. An ethical approach and ensuring a good environment for both animals and humans at Karolinska Institutet are key principles guiding our work.

KM maintains the highest possible standards of animal welfare, and ethical principles such as the Animal welfare and 3Rs are embedded throughout our operations.

We also act as a link between Karolinska Institutet and external authorities that regulate the use of animals in research, such as the Swedish Board of Agriculture. We also administer the local Animal Welfare Body (AWB) at KI.

Animal research at Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet’s mission is to improve human health through research and education. This is achieved both through basic research to understand biological mechanisms and through research that develops new treatments.

A large part of research is conducted using in vitro methods, but it is not yet possible to fully replace the use of laboratory animals with alternative methods.

Animal research is strictly regulated and governed by Swedish and EU legislation on animal welfare. Read more about animal research at Karolinska Institutet.

What does comparative medicine mean?

Comparative medicine is a research field within experimental medicine that studies:

  • natural and experimental animal models of human diseases
  • etiopathogenesis (how diseases arise), epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious or other diseases in laboratory animals
  • the normal biology of laboratory animals in relation to humans

Those of us working in the Comparative Medicine unit do not conduct our own research; instead, researchers come to us to use our infrastructure, services, and expertise in the field.

Organisation

Comparative Medicine at Karolinska Institutet has existed since 2010 and is part of KI’s research infrastructure organization, RIKI.

Comparative Medicine includes various service facilities with animal-based operations, as well as an educational unit offering courses in laboratory animal science. Read more about the units and service facilities of Comparative Medicine.
